In less than a week to the 2nd Ghana Youth Conference on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (GYCCC-SD17), a five member delegation on Friday paid a courtesy call on the Former President of Ghana, His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor. The visit provided an opportunity to engage the Ex-president on issues of global climate change climate challenge and the need for youth participation to address its impact in Ghana. The team also took the advantage to present to him an official invitation as a special guest to the event.
The Ex-president by the appointment of Mr. Ban Ki-Moon in December 2013 served as a Special UN Envoy on Climate Change and “as part of his work, assisted the then UN Secretary-General in his consultations with leaders to raise the level of ambition to address climate change and to accelerate action”. This contributed to the Paris Climate Agreement (PCA) and subsequently, the Nationally Determined Contributions submitted by Parties to the UNFCCC. The PCA sets to limit increase in global temperature to well below 2 degree Celsius and aspires to 1.5 degree Celsius by 2030.
The delegation was led by Mr. Kassim Gawusu-Toure, the Coordinator of GYCCC-SD and the Executive Director of Greener Impact International. Others members of the delegation include Mr. Mathias Edetor, a Climate Reality Leader and a Research Volunteer at the Climate Change Resource Center-Ghana at University of Ghana; Ms. Woojoo Kim from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP-Ghana); Mr. Kassim Hussein and Ms. Fawzia Zuka Muhammed both from Greener Impact International.
